Music is so important for boot camp classes. Music has the power to set the vibe you want for the style of class ahead, trigger motivation and positive mood, build tempo, and will create positive memories of your class associated with the songs. How badass is it that when someone heres a specific song they they think you putting them through a killer workout?!

So the question is not weather music is important, we know it is. The question we all have is what type of music is best, where to get it, and how to play it.

I added some of my playlist below I use in my AXFIT Classes. I highly recommend using these playlist with our AXFIT training guides…a great pairing!

CHOOSING MUSIC

I like to play positive, uplifting, upbeat, electronic, instrumental style music in my classes. In my list I try try to find music I don’t think my clients have heard, something that will create new memories for them in my class. I spend many hours each month finding new music to create a relevant, fresh, and hip vibe in the class. I would absolutely stay away from playing Top 40 list, or classic pop throwbacks. Use your music selection as a competitive edge over other classes in your area. I love thinking of my class as a “production”. When clients walk in I always have music playing to set the tone and get them pumped up. The more your can add an entertainment element to your classes, the better.

When selecting music for the class ahead, find something you feel represents your training style and the vibe you are trying to create. For example, if i’m doing a cardio style workout I would play a fast tempo, high energy playlist. If i’m doing a hardcore heavy weights class I may choose a rock or hip hop playlist or something a little more edgy. One thing that is important to remember is the music played during class isn’t the music I listen to outside of class on my personal time and probably goes the same for the clients. You have to think of music played during classes as a training tool just like any other equipment you use. The music has a purpose, a very important purpose.

Not to get to technical, but the best music to listen to is between 120-140 beats per minute, which also happens to be the standard tempo for upbeat electronic music. Mixes 01-03 in my playlist included fall in this range.

USING SPOTIFY FOR MUSIC  

There are lots of options for getting music and I feel like i’ve used them all! By far my favourite source for music after testing pretty much everything on the market is Spotify. Spotify is a app that you can use on any device and can even download a version for your laptop/home computer. I love this computer desktop feature, since I can create new playlist right from my laptop, which is where I have always created my playlists from in the past and am comfortable with. The beauty of Spotify is that there is no downloading, transferring files between devices, or any of those frustrations typically involved in making custom playlist.

Spotify is free, so go make an account, download the app to your device and your computer. I think the free version of Spotify is fine, but you do get ads that play every 30min (approx.) of listening. I still use the free version and just usually turn the music down during the ad to give a motivational speech in class haha, which has been great. I do plan on getting the premium version, which lets you play music without ads and also without any WIFI or using data. Very cool feature for outdoor boot camps or if you don’t have WIFI or a good data plan where you are teaching class. There are so many great features of Spotify, including being able to add other peoples playlist and the way you can find new music easily based on what you like.
